Music

The state has a unique music style, a distinctive Appalachian sound that is considered a result of the fusion of several musical traditions that West Virginia's early settlers brought together, including folk, bluegrass, Celtic, African, blues, gospel, and more. There are multiple venues, festivals, concerts, and even casual pickin' circles, where you'll probably be encouraged to dance or strum along. You’ll definitely enjoy mountain music!

Top Tourist Attractions

  • Blackwater Falls State Park

Blackwater Falls are located over sandstone cliffs over about 60 feet. The river is named after the black waters of the Blackwater River, which are tinted by tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The falls are accessible all year round, thanks to steps and observation platforms.

  • The Greenbrier

This place is well known for being a historic landmark. The elegant hotel, which is situated near White Sulphur Springs, a natural spa that has been used since the 1700s, has welcomed 26 presidents, leaders from other countries, and members of the royal family, including Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

  • West Virginia State Museum and Culture Center

The museum, located in Charleston, is the perfect place to learn about the state's culture, history, art, paleontology, archaeology, and geology. This is one of the state's free activities. A pair of dressed fleas from a 19th-century flea circus is one of the museum's 60,000 exhibits that attract the most visitors.

  • Seneca Caverns

It is believed that the Seneca natives first utilized the caverns as a refuge in the early 1400s. The limestone bed of Seneca Caverns initially developed 460 million years ago, and the biggest chamber, which rises to a height of 60 feet in some places, is called Teter Hall in honor of the local farmer Laven Teter who discovered the caves while searching for water for his animals.
